Oscars 2017 - best screenplay

Here are the Oscar nominations for this year’s Best Original Screenplay. Who do you think will win?

  • 20th Century Women 
  • Hell or High Water 
  • La La Land 
  • The Lobster 
  • Manchester by the Sea 

Let’s take a quick look at the writers behind each film and then you can vote below for who you think will come out on top on February 26th.

20th Century Women – Written by Mike Mills. If you remember the modest indie hit Thumbsucker which came out in 2005, you’ll know Mike Mills is a writer who favors quirky indie comedy-dramas, similar in style to Jared Hess and Tom McCarthy.

His biggest success so far was the 2010 film, Beginners, starring Ewan McGregor, Mélanie Laurent, and Christopher Plummer. Maybe 20th Century Women is Mike Mills’ chance to hit the big time?

Hell or High Water – Written by Taylor Sheridan. Taylor Sheridan has been doing the rounds as a TV actor since the early 1990s, and his only previous writing credit has been for Sicario, directed by the great Denis Villeneuve.

If that wasn’t impressive enough, he’s now been nominated for the Best Original Screenplay for Hell or High Water and has a number of very interesting writing projects in development.

La La Land  – Written by Damien Chazelle. Damien Chazelle only really entered the public’s consciousness with Whiplash, but it’s easy to forget that he also wrote The Last Exorcism Part II and Grand Piano, starring Elijah Wood and John Cusack.

In fact, La La Land in a way comes full circle on his career back to his first movie, Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench. Shot in black and white and released in 2009, it’s also a jazz musical about two young lovers who seem destined to be together.

The Lobster – Written by Yorgos Lanthimos & Efthymis Filippou. The Lobster is writing duo Yorgos and Efthymis’s first English language film and definitely the strangest of this year’s Best Screenplay nominations.

The story takes place in a dystopian near-future in which all single people are required to find a partner within forty-five days or be transformed into a wild animal.

Manchester by the Sea – Written by Kenneth Lonergan. Kenneth’s first feature screenplay was back in 1999 for Analyze This, starring Billy Crystal and Robert Di Nero, and his writing credits also include Gangs of New York, Analyze That and Margaret.

He is perhaps best known, though, for one of the greatest dramas of the 2000s, You Can Count On Me — a film every aspiring drama screenwriter should watch, break down and study if they want to master the craft of conveying understated but powerful emotions.

    I emjoyed both the filming and the acting.
    The ending was a little predictable. This does not really matter as part of a film’ duty is to entertain. This film did.

    Hell or High Water – Not as exciting as it should’ve been.
    La La Land – Quite depressing actually. Why the hysterical praise?
    20th Century Women – Women yakking about periods. Most boring movie of the year.
    The Lobster – Overly weird, unfunny, way too long.
    Manchester by the Sea – Solid drama. Only Oscar worthy movie on the list.
